Also known as vernacular jazz or authentic jazz, solo jazz grew out of Black social dance traditions in the early twentieth century. It celebrates rhythm, improvisation, musicality and individual expression, and remains the foundation of many swing dances today.

In this welcoming 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of classic solo jazz vocabulary while exploring the rhythms, movement quality and playful spirit that make this dance so distinctive. You’ll discover how to hear the music differently, move with confidence, and dance with the music – not just to it.

Whether you’re completely new to dance, looking to complement your Lindy Hop, or simply curious about the roots of swing dance culture, this workshop offers a relaxed and supportive place to begin.

You’ll learn:
– Classic solo jazz vocabulary
– Rhythm, groove and musicality
– Body isolations and expressive movement
– A fun beginner-friendly routine
– Foundations for future solo jazz classes

At Hotfoot Society, which is officially affiliated with Cape Town Swing, we approach solo jazz not simply as a collection of steps, but as a living cultural tradition. Alongside movement, you’ll gain an appreciation for its history, its ongoing evolution, and the remarkable dancers who shaped it.

No partner or previous dance experience required.

Expect classic routines, archive-inspired ensemble work, musicality, and a deeper connection to the roots of jazz dance. These classes are ideal for dancers who want to expand their solo movement vocabulary and engage with historical material in a fun, supportive environment.

Hotfoot Society, officially affiliated with CTS, is a space for exploring authentic jazz dance traditions through shared learning, movement, and community.
