General Questions
Cape Town Swing (CTS) is a community-driven organisation dedicated to swing dancing and swing jazz. We run dance classes, social events, and live music experiences to bring people together through the joy of dance.
The term “swing dancing” is a very broad umbrella term.
When we use the term, we are typically referring to the dances that developed during the Swing Era, to swing music, in 1920s and ‘30s African American communities – particularly in Harlem, New York.
Theses dances include Lindy Hop, Charleston, Blues, Balboa, Shag and others, each of which has its own unique “flavour” and character. They are mostly quite athletic and energetic, drawing inspiration from the big bands of the Swing Era that played a variety of jazz music for large crowds in ballrooms all over the country. Swing dancers ground their movement in the rhythm section of the music, emphasising syncopation, musicality, improvisation, humour and self-expression.
However, in the decades that followed the Swing Era, dance cultures evolved in various communities, and different styles emerged such as West Coast Swing, Rodeo Swing, Hand Dancing, Shag, Jive, East Coast Swing, and Jitterbug. These are often all referred to as “swing dances” and are danced to a variety of music, not only swinging jazz.
At Cape Town Swing, we specialise in the dances of the Swing Era, particularly Lindy Hop, Solo Jazz and Charleston (which are typically all mixed up when danced socially). We also dabble in Balboa, Blues and Shag.
Swing dancing is for everyone—no natural rhythm or dance experience required! Our classes are designed to be beginner-friendly, with step-by-step instruction and plenty of practice. The most important thing is to have fun, and with time, you’ll feel more confident on the dance floor.
Classes & Learning
Nope! Most of our classes are structured so that dancers rotate partners throughout the lesson. This helps everyone learn to dance with different people and creates a welcoming social environment.
Comfortable streetwear that allows for movement is best. For shoes, we recommend flat, smooth-soled footwear that allows you to pivot easily—avoid heavy treads or high heels.
We offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced-level classes. If you're new to swing, start with our beginner series. If you have prior experience, chat with one of our teachers to find the best fit.
Absolutely! We welcome dancers of all gender identities and orientations, and we don’t assume dance roles based on gender. You’re free to choose to lead, follow, or try both! Our community values inclusivity, respect, and fun.
Yes! Private lessons are available for individuals or small groups who want one-on-one attention. Contact us to arrange a session with one of our teachers.
Yes! In addition to our regular class series, we occasionally run weekend workshops. These are great for deep dives into specific styles or techniques. Keep an eye on our WhatsApp community or sign up for our newsletter to stay updated.
In partnered swing dancing (as with most partnered dancing), there are two roles: ‘leader’ and ‘follower’. The leader initiates movement, and the follower interprets the leader’s suggestions. These roles are not gendered; you may learn either role. It’s usually more effective to learn one role at a time, and then to try the other role later on if you like. Being an ‘ambi’ dancer means that you’re proficient at both leading and following – which means you can dance with everyone! More fun right there…
Yes! We encourage dancers to learn both roles if they’re interested. Traditionally, one person leads (guides the movement) and the other follows, but in modern swing scenes, many people enjoy dancing both roles. In class environments however, we encourage you to stick with one role so as to limit confusion 🙂
We usually film short recaps at the end of our classes, and make them available to CTS Members. There’s also lots of video content on YouTube from various schools and festivals around the globe. If you know the name of the thing you’re searching, it’ll help with the search.
Social Dancing & Events
Social dances are open dance events where people of all levels can come together to dance, practice, and have fun! There’s usually a DJ or live band, and no partner is required.
Not at all! You’re welcome to dance with whoever you feel comfortable with. That said, swing dancing is a social dance, and we encourage a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. It’s common to ask (or be asked) to dance, and a simple “yes” or “no, thank you” is always respected.
That’s completely normal! The swing dance community is welcoming, and most people are happy to dance with beginners. If you’re unsure, start with a simple, “Would you like to dance?” And remember, it’s always okay to say “no, thank you” or to take breaks if you need to.
Not at all—wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and allows you to move! Some dancers enjoy dressing up in vintage or retro styles, but it’s not required. Smooth-soled shoes are a good idea, as they make dancing easier.
This depends on the venue! Some of our socials happen at licensed bars, where outside drinks aren’t allowed, while others may be BYO-friendly. Check the event details beforehand, or ask us if you're unsure.
We do our best to host events in accessible venues, but accessibility can vary depending on the location. If you have specific needs, please contact us in advance, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you!
Membership & Getting Involved
